The herbarium houses two main collections, the vascular plants and the algae.  Most of the vascular plants represent the flora of the Rio Grande Valley, Tex.  Coastal plants, including aquatics, as well as those from Tamaulipan Brush are important parts of the collection. We also house specimens from Rancho del Cielo, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

The extensive collection of plants from Cameron County was collected, annotated, and curated by Dr. Alfred Richardson, Ph. D.  The Department of Biological Sciences is indebted to him for the many, many  years of work which he put into the herbarium.

The algae represent collections from the marine and brackish habitats.  Many representatives of the Laguna Madre as well as Padre Island and the Boca Chica area are included.  Dr. Sorensen contributed the fine collection of algae to the University of Texas Brownsville and is curated by Dr. Eli Pena.
