Research focus: Molecular Plant Systematics; DNA sequence data are used to study the systematics, evolution, and biogeography of plants and reconstruction of the tree of life of plants.  We are also studying the use of medicinal plants in the Rio Grande Valley and we are using DNA barcoding methods for identification purposes of medicinal plants.
