Posted November 9, 2007
FORT WORTH -- The UTB/TSC women's volleyball team took care of business in the first day of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament, winning two matches at the Sid Richardson Center on the campus of Texas Wesleyan University Friday, November 9.

The top-seeded Scorpions cruised past seventh-seeded Bacone University, 3-0, in the quarterfinals and then downed fourth-seeded College of the Southwest, 3-0, in the semifinals to advance to the tournament championship match at 2 p.m. Saturday.

UTB/TSC, now 29-7, will face #2 seed Texas Wesleyan University (30-14) for the RRAC title. The Scorpions have defeated TWU twice this season.

The Scorpions, the NAIA's 18th-ranked team, allowed only 28 points in three games to Bacone and was never threatened by CSW.

“We played well the entire match and were pretty consistent passing and hitting," Scorpion head coach Marcus Young said about the CSW match. "We had too much firepower for them."

UTB/TSC will be going for its first Red River Athletic Conference volleyball championship, after finishing second place last year to Houston Baptist University, which is no longer in the RRAC. The Scorpions have already clinched the top seed in the NAIA Region VI Tournament November 16-17 in Lubbock.

"We’re pretty focused for tomorrow's game," Young said. We want to bring the championship home.”

In the semifinal match, the Scorpions were determined to play well and sweep the Mustangs. It was the third meeting of the season and the third Scorpion win. CSW finished its season at 9-20.

Claudia Alarcon led the Scorpions with 16 kills and 15 digs and a .367 hitting percentage, while Talita Milasauskas had 13 kills and 11 digs and a .370 hitting percentage.

Katie Japp added nine kills and nine digs, and Viviana Lozano added 10 digs. Setter Daianarah Bracero had 43 assists.

Scorpions 3, Bacone 0 (30-8, 30-12, 30-8)

In the quarterfinal match that lasted less than 55 minutes, the Scorpions allowed only 28 points in three games in the rout of Bacone University. UTB/TSC was an overwhelming favorite over Bacone, which finished its season 4-20.

Coach Marcus Young emptied his bench against Bacone, so the statistics were not overwhelming for the regulars. As a team, the Scorpions hit .494, their best of the season.

Milasauskas had 10 kills out of 16 attempts with no errors and a .625 hitting percentage. Japp had nine kills out 14 attempts with one error for a .571 hitting percentage.
