Scorpions Go to Houston to Face New Team, Old Rival

The nationally ranked UTB/TSC Scorpions women’s volleyball team faces a new foe and an old rival in Houston Friday and Saturday, September 21-22.

UTB/TSC, 13-4 and 2-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference, plays two non-conference matches against a team that wants to be in the RRAC -- Houston St. Thomas -- and another that just left -- Houston Baptist University.

The Scorpions play the non-conference games at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday, respectively.

St. Thomas University is in its second year playing volleyball. STU is a member of the NAIA but is not affiliated with any conference yet. The Celts are expected to apply for admission into the RRAC.

The Celts are 3-5 this year. This will be the first meeting ever between the two schools.

On Saturday, the Scorpions meet a Houston Baptist team that handed the Scorpions four of their 12 losses in 2006. UTB/TSC started that season with a 6-9 record, including one loss to HBU, but finished the season winning 21 of its last 24 matches -- with all three losses coming to HBU.

The NAIA rivalry was short-lived. HBU has left the NAIA and joined NCAA Division I as an independent.

The Scorpions are playing their first game since winning their second conference match Tuesday, September 18, against College of the Southwest before a rowdy crowd of 300.

The Scorpions are led by middle blocker Talita Milasauskas, who leads the RRAC in aces with a 0.8 average and blocks with a 1.6 average. Dainarah Bracero leads the conference with a 11.6 average in assists.
