Scorpions Snap Skid with 2-1 Victory over HTU

AUSTIN -- The UTB/TSC women's soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 non-conference win over Huston-Tillotson University here Sunday, October 7.

The win elevated the Scorpions' season record to 8-6 overall, while HTU dropped to 1-6-1 overall.

The Scorpions scored twice in the first half to take control of the game.

In the 15th minute, Lorinda Gomez scored on a header after a cross pass from the right side by Carling Rootes, who got the assist.

In the 27th minute, Lena Candia scored from close range with an assist by Lauren Owens.

The Scorpions led 2-0 at halftime before HTU scored once in the second half in the 75th minute.

UTB/TSC had 23 shots on goal, compared to five for HTU. Jacqui Ruiz played the entire game at goalkeeper and had three saves.

"We're happy about the win, but we expected more," Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "But after a long season on the road, it was nice to win by any margin."

The Scorpions have completed their road portion of their schedule, and have three games remaining in the regular season, all at home. UTB/TSC hosts Monterrey Tec at 7 p.m. Saturday at Morningside Park.
