Houston Baptist Scores Quickly, Holds Off Scorpions, 4-2

HOUSTON -- Houston Baptist University scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game and went on to defeat UTB/TSC, 4-2, in a women's soccer game here Saturday, October 6.

HBU, a member of NCAA Division I,  improved to 7-4-1 overall while the Scorpions dropped to 7-6.

The Scorpions stay in Texas and head to Austin for a non-conference game against Huston-Tillotson University at 6 p.m. Sunday, October 7. UTB/TSC has already defeated HTU in a conference game, 4-0, in Brownsville in September.

"We had a disastrous start, but we actually were able to clean up some things in the second half, and could have made it closer," Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "We played better second half, and had the momentum, but we just couldn't connect."

HBU scored in the 2nd minute, 6th minute, and 10th minute to take a quick 3-0 lead.

The Scorpions scored just moments later, in the 14th minute, when Samantha Thorman scored on a beautiful shot over the goalkeeper's head and into the corner of the goal. Lauren Owens had the assist. The score stayed 3-1 at halftime.

HBU scored in the 75th minute to make it 4-1 before Jessica Herrera scored a goal in the 85th minute with an assist by Thorman to make it 4-2. Lena Candia almost scored moments later, but her shot hit the crossbar.

HBU outshot the Scorpions, 11-8.

Although the Scorpions lost their third straight, "we're not putting our heads down, because we played well in the second half today," Barjaktarevic said. "Hopefully we can play with some confidence against Huston-Tillotson and get ready for our last two conference matches after that.
