Soccer Scorpions Outlast McPherson, 3-2

CEDAR HILL -- UTB/TSC scored three goals in the first half and held on to defeat
McPherson College (Kan.) in the
Southwest Assemblies of God University Classic Tournament, held at Northwood
University in Cedar Hill Friday, September 14.
The Scorpions (4-2) will stay in Cedar Hill to take on York College (Neb.) at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 15.
The Scorpions had 24 shots on goal, compared to seven for McPherson, now 0-5-1. Goalkeeper Jessica Hamer played all 90 minutes for the Scorpions and had four saves.
Aliesha Cassie got the Scorpions on the scoreboard in the fifth minute of the game unassisted on a long 35-yard kick that got into the right corner of the goal. McPherson tied it at 1-1 in the 19th minute of the first half.
In the 22nd minute, the Scorpions' leading scorer Lena Candia scored with an assist by Olyvia Gaytan, putting the Scorpions ahead, 2-1, a lead they never relinquished.
In the 43rd minute of first half, Jessica Herrera scored her first goal of season, hitting the right side of the net with an assist by Candia.
McPherson made it 3-2 with a goal in 10th minute of the second half.
"We're excited about the win," Scorpion coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "We hope to win another game tomorrow (Saturday) and again on Tuesday, and are really looking forward to playing at home next week."
After the road trip to Cedar Hill, the Scorpions will visit Texas Lutheran University in Seguin at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, before heading home to Morningside Park with games on Thursday, September 20, and Saturday, September 22.
