
Women's Soccer Scorpions Win Historic Season Opener

LAREDO -- The UTB/TSC
women's soccer team knocked off Texas A&M International University, 3-1, in
the historic first-ever soccer game for the Scorpions.
UTB/TSC is in its first year of its men's and women's soccer program.
Lena Candia scored a hat trick (soccer and hockey terminology for three goals), scoring twice in the first half and once in the second half.
"It's great to open up with a win," Scorpion women's soccer coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "That's awesome, it's definitely a good start for us."
Candia took four shots in the game. She scored in the 28th minute with an assist by Aleisha Cassie, in the 31st minute with an assist by Lauren Owens, and in the 89th minute with an assist by Mayra Solis.
"We played a lot better in the first half but we still need a lot of work," Barjaktarevic said. "We're not as ready as we're supposed to be. We're glad we have a week off before our next game, because we need to work on a lot of things."
The Scorpions will be off until Monday, September 3, when they play St. Gregory's University in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
