Soccer Scorpions To Call Morningside Park Home

Morningside Park will be the home for the UTB/TSC men's and women's soccer teams for the 2007 season.

It's the first year for the Scorpion Soccer program, which will be competing as a member of the Red River Athletic Conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The season begins August 23.

UTB/TSC Director of Athletics Dan Huntley and City of Brownsville Parks and Recreation Director Skip Keller negotiated an agreement for use of the park for Scorpion home games.

"Our goal from the onset was to secure the best playing surface in Brownsville for our home matches and we have accomplished that," Huntley said. "I am very excited to see the end product of what Coach Balaguero and Barjaktarevic have put together four our inaugural year.  I think that once you watch a game you will become a fan of Scorpion Soccer. Working cooperatively will have great benefits for all users as a new scoreboard will be installed at the soccer field."

Huntley was very thankful to work with Keller and City Parks and Recreation Events and Recreation Coordinator Ray Arellano. "It has been great to work with Skip and Ray," Huntley said. "They have made many concessions that will allow us to put on a first class event at the city facility this fall."

The men's team and women's team each will play seven of their 18 games at Morningside. On the days they play together, the women's game will be at 5 p.m. and the men's game will be at 7 p.m. The teams will practice at Scorpion Baseball Field.

Morningside Park is one of 26 parks operated by the City of Brownsville. It is located at the southern end of Central Avenue south of Morningside Road near the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport.
