Three women’s soccer
players, all from Brownsville and currently attending UTB/TSC, have signed
letters of intent to play for the Scorpions starting the fall of 2007.
Sophomore twin sisters Jessica and Jovanna Herrera and junior Anais Gonzalez signed Letters of Intent to play for the Scorpions in a ceremony Tuesday, June 12.
The signings brings the total number of women's soccer players who have signed to eight.
The women’s soccer team begins play Thursday, August 23, 2007 against the Instituto Tecnologico Superiores de Poza Rica Petroleros.
Jessica Herrera (midfielder) and Jovanna Herrera (defender)
Jessica and Jovanna graduated from Hanna High School in 2006 and are were enrolled at UTB/TSC in 2006-07 and will be sophomores in 2007-08. Jessica played midfielder in high school while Jovanna was a defender.
"Jessica and Jovanna are both extremely hard workers and this is the reason they stood out when we did the tryouts," Scorpion women's soccer coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "Jessica has more playmaking abilities and will contend for the spot in the midfield and Jovanna is very tenacious and aggressive defender. They played together for a long time and understand each other and each brings something unique to our team."
Jessica will be majoring in Physical Therapy and Jovanna in Health and Human Performance.
"It will be a new experience and really looking forward to it. It's always been our dream to play college soccer. "I'm just real excited," Jovanna said. "It's a dream come true for both of us."
Anais Gonzalez (forward)
Gonzalez, a four-year letterman in both soccer and track, graduated from Lopez High School in 2004. She was captain of the Lady Lobos soccer team her junior and senior year. She was the Most Valuable Player her sophomore year, was Vice President of Sports Medicine and was the President of the class of 2004.
"Anais is a very talented player and although did not play for last three years seeing her in action couple of times got me excited to see what she can do in soccer shape, training and playing with our the team," Barjaktarevic. "She is athletic and technical player that is very composed and knows what to do with the ball. Anais as a natural attacker will contend for one of the spots in the front line."
She was been a UTB/TSC student for three years and will be a junior for eligibility purposes. She is majoring in Elementary Education.
"It's a big comeback for me because I've been out for three years," Gonzalez said. "I'm hoping we'll be successful for our first year."
