Cuvillier, Thorman Sign Soccer Letters of Intent

Posted April 4, 2007
The first two women's soccer players have signed letters of intent to play for the Scorpions starting the fall of 2007.

The players signed are current UTB/TSC students Linette Cuvillier of Los Fresnos and Samantha Lee Thorman of Harlingen High School.

"Having two Valley standouts as the first signees for the women’s soccer program is the reflection of our commitment to have the best area players represent us as well as the level of soccer in the Rio Grande Valley," Scorpion head women's soccer coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "We are constantly evaluating players from the area, state, nation and international players as well and will continue to bring the best student/athletes to proudly represent our team and the University."

"What I liked about both Linette and Sami was their pace; they were both very technical, natural goal scorers that can also play in different positions, hard workers as well as good students with great personality."

The women’s soccer team begins play Thursday, August 23, 2007 against the Instituto Tecnologico Superiores de Poza Rica Petroleros.

Linette Cuvillier

A 2006 graduate of Los Fresnos High, Cuvillier played two years for the Falcons' first-ever girls' soccer team. She enrolled at UTB/TSC in fall 2006.

"I wanted to play here to stay close to my family," Cuvillier said. "I've been playing soccer since I was seven years old and went to try for the Junior Olympics when I was 12 years old. I've known for a long time that I wanted to play. My goal is to be a professional soccer player."

"Linette is very good technically, aggressive, can score goals as well, and both will be compete for the starting spot this fall," Barjaktarevic said.

Samantha Lee Thorman

Thorman is a 2006 graduate of Harlingen High School. She was a member of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team in fall 2006, but transferred to UTB/TSC in the spring. She has been playing soccer since she was 4 years old.

"I transferred to UTB/TSC in hopes that we would have a women's soccer program," Thorman said. "I am so excited to be part of the first team that the University will ever have, and I'm also excited to represent the Valley as well."

"Samantha already played at The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and has proven that she can score goals at the college level," Barjaktarevic said.
