Midfielders Theresa Berman and Milica Mihajlovic signed Red River Athletic Conference Letters of Intent to play women's soccer for the UTB/TSC Scorpions during a ceremony Thursday, January 31.
"We couldn’t be happier with Theresa and Milica as our first two commitments for 2008 and it’s a great sign of quality recruiting class we are putting together for next season," Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "With a quality core of returning players and only two starters not returning from last year's team, we are very optimistic about building on the success from our inaugural season, adding a lot more depth and quality as we grow as a team."
UTB/TSC will return 13 players from the 2007 inaugural women’s soccer team that finished 13-7 and won the RRAC Tournament Championship. The Scorpions were eliminated in the NAIA Region VI quarterfinals.
Berman comes to UTB/TSC from Sacred Heart High School in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, where she will graduate in June. She has played club soccer for many years in Ontario for the Markham Lightning and Richmond Hill clubs. She was also captain for her high school team.
"Theresa is an attacking midfielder who can make things happen," Barjaktarevic said. "'(Assistant) Coach (Christian) Gallucci saw her play first and was very impressed with her pace and how she can control the game from the midfield. She is expected to make an immediate impact on the team not only for her play but academically as well."
Mihajlovic is a native of Nis, Serbia, where she graduated from Chemical High School in 2006. She played club soccer for the Olympic Club from 1998-2003 and for FK Masinac from 2003-06.
"Milica is a natural defensive midfielder, whose strong presence in the back combined with playmaking ability and great feel for the game should have her one as of the regular features in starting 11 next season," Barjaktarevic said. "She also played at a high level in Serbia and has a lot of international experience that will add seasoning to our team."
Barjaktarevic is expected to sign several more recruits this spring.
