Scorpions Win with 90 Seconds Left in Second Overtime, 1-0

HOUSTON -- For the fourth time this year, the UTB/TSC men's soccer team won a dramatic game in the closing moments in a 1-0 overtime win over St. Thomas University here Sunday, October 7.

After a foul on Scorpion forward Enrique Rivera, Mark McCormick had a free kick, and Fernando Mendoza positioned himself perfectly for a header into the net with 90 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.

The Scorpions improved their record to 9-3-1 while St. Thomas dropped to 5-6-1.

"These guys should be the cardiac kids, because they may send me to the hospital," Scorpion head coach Dan Balaguero said. "It was a back-and-forth game. After the disappointment of losing 2-1 to Houston Baptist Saturday, at least we found a way to win."

The Scorpions outshot the Celts, 6-3. Bojan Maric played all 110 minutes as goalkeeper for the Scorpions.

"Anytime you get a shutout on the road, it's a great victory," Balaguero said. "Now we're looking forward to some home cooking."

The Scorpions, who lead the Red River Athletic Conference with a 5-0 record, have four games remaining, all at home, between October 13-20. UTB/TSC hosts Monterrey Tech at Morningside Park at 7 p.m. October 13.
