Scorpions Take Sixth Straight Victory, 1-0
Posted September 29, 2007
FORT WORTH -- Mark McCormick scored the only
goal of the game for the second time in a week as the UTB/TSC Scorpions
tightened their grip on the Red River Athletic Conference lead with a 1-0 win
over Teas Wesleyan University here Saturday night.
It was the sixth straight victory for the Scorpions, who now command the RRAC with a 5-0 record. Four other teams have one loss. The Scorpions are 8-2-1 overall.
TWU dropped to 5-4-1 and 1-1 in conference play.
"This was huge, it was big time," Scorpion head coach Dan Balaguero said. "We're in the driver's seat now and can clinch the conference championship at our home field later in the month."
McCormick, the team captain, scored on a free kick from 30 yards out in the 29th minute for the only score of the game. On September 22 in Brownsville, McCormick scored the only goal on a header after a throw-in by Pablo Degollado.
Juan Gamboa played the entire game at goalkeeper and had three saves. Balaguero credited Gamboa and the defensive foursome of David Purser, Mike Hudson, Mark McCarron and Marco Malovic for preserving the shutout.
"The back four were tremendous," Balaguero said. "It was a great defensive effort tonight, and now we have something to show for it."
The Scorpions will be on the road again next weekend with games against Houston Baptist University on October 6 and St. Thomas University of Houston October 7.
