Freshman Foreign-Born Soccer Players Sign Letters of Intent

 Three freshman soccer players from across the Atlantic Ocean, two from Serbia and one from Denmark, have signed Letters of Intent to play men's soccer for the Scorpions this fall.

Midfielder Marco Malovic and goalkeeper Bojan Maric, both from Belgrade, Serbia, and Andres Nielsen from Copenhagen, Denmark, will become part of the first Scorpion men's soccer team when it begins play this fall. Thus far, 19 players have signed letters of intent.

"All three players have been raised in cultures where soccer is life," Scorpion men's soccer coach Dan Balaguero said. "They are all very coachable and fundamentally very sound.  I expect all three of them to hit the ground running in August.  I am extremely proud that they have committed to play here, and look forward to working with them."

 

The players will report for the start of Scorpion men's soccer practice in early August. The Scorpions begin play Thursday, August 23, against Instituto Technologico Superiores de Poza Rica.

Bojan Maric (Goalkeeper)
"Bojan is a disciplined and technically sound keeper, Balaguero said. "He has great hands and all-around goalkeeping ability, collects crosses well and is a superb shoot stopper. He makes the saves he should make and also has the ability to make the match-winning save.  He is a very disciplined student-athlete who prepares himself well in the classroom and on the field."

Maric has been playing soccer since the age of seven. Maric spent 10 years as a goalie defending the net of the FC Red Star youth soccer team, one of the premier teams in Europe. He has had many successes and has earned many trophies for his teams as well as in school competitions. 

"I am very grateful to be selected to the Scorpion soccer team," Maric said, who will major in Communication. "While I am proud of my current successes, I look forward to further growth and accomplishment on the soccer field.  As much as I look forward to growing on the soccer field, I also look forward development and success in my education."

Marco Malovic (Midfielder)
"Marco is a player I have been following for several years," Balaguero said. "His wonderful technique sets him apart from other players.  He is a real handful for defenders, he can glide by players and serve the killer pass. He can play as a striker or an attacking midfielder, blessed with a magic left foot."

He is currently the leading scorer on the FC Mont Voltage soccer team in Vermont, where he is residing with family this summer. In Belgrade, he played soccer with the youth system of the Red Star Belgrade team.

"I'm really thankful for a chance to play for such a strong club, and looking forward to a upcoming season," Malovic said. "I cannot wait to meet the rest of the team and represent the university colors on the field.

 

Andres Nielsen (Midfielder)

"Andres is a top quality player, he represented the Danish National Team at the U15 level," Balaguero said. "He has superb dribbling and balance skills, and has the ability to beat players down the line or can cut inside and finish a nice advantage for a two-footed wide player. He loves running at players, with his exciting play he will become a firm favorite with fans."
