Three more soccer players, two from
the Valley and a transfer from the University of Maine, have signed NAIA Letters of Intent to
play for the Scorpions this fall.
Iain McGregor of Scotland who currently attends UTB/TSC, San Benito High School senior Jesus Zuniga, and Andy Price from the University of Maine will join the Scorpions in the fall.
"The three players all bring different qualities to the program, and I’m thrilled they will be joining us," Scorpion head coach Dan Balaguero said. "They are all very good students as well as being very versatile players. I know they will all be very successful in not only their playing careers here but in their endeavors after college."
The players will report for the start of Scorpion men's soccer practice in early August. The Scorpions begin play Thursday, August 23, against Instituto Technologico Superiores de Poza Rica.
Iain
MacGregor (Defender)
“Iain is a very experienced player who will add strength to our defense," Balaguero said. "He is a tremendous competitor who will dominate in the air and in the tackle. You parlay all his experience and strength with his ability to play and you have a very valuable player. Iain knows his way around the field and can also operate as a defensive midfielder."
MacGregor, who carries a 3.9 grade point average, is a native of Scotland who has been attending UTB/TSC for two years. He plans to graduate in December with a bachelor's degree in Health and Human Performance.
"As someone who is a little older than the traditional college player, I am delighted to have been selected to be part of the inaugural UTB/TSC soccer team," MacGregor said. "I hope to use my experience to assist in our quest for success. I look forward to playing alongside the quality players that have been selected from around the world and cannot wait for the season to begin."
Andy
Price (defender)
"Andy is a player I worked with at the University of Maine and will bring valuable experience to the side," Balaguero said. "He has been in a Division I environment for two years where he started 26 games. He is a very good organizer who reads the game extremely well, times tackles well and makes good decisions with his distribution from the back."
Price went to Temple Moore High School in Leeds, England. He was named to the America East Academic Honor Roll two years and a Maine Scholar-Athlete Rising Star one year. He will be a junior at UTB/TSC and plans to major in Communications.
"After two disappointing years at Maine I am looking forward to this amazing opportunity to start fresh with a great coach and a new team that has the ability to win a national championship," Price said. "I am looking forward to playing soccer in an environment where the community loves it as much as I do. There is no substitute for support and I think with the support of the school and the local people the possibilities for this program are endless. I just can’t wait to start working with the guys."
Jesus
Zuniga (defender/midfielder)
"Every time I see Jesus play the more I like him," Balaguero said. "He is very fit with good pace, has the ability to drift by players. He delivers a very good ball on the dribble. Look for Jesus to be a feature at right back/right midfield."
Zuniga was a four-year starter at San Benito and has been named to the the District 32-5A All-District team.
"I think this is a
wonderful opportunity for me to grow as a soccer player," Zuniga said. "I feel
like I can help the team by being a disciplined and coachable player. I know I
will always give 100 percent all the time. We are going to have a great team
and hope we make UTB/TSC proud."
