Posted April 19, 2007
Goalkeeper Juan Gamboa from Pace High School has signed a Letter of Intent
to play collegiate men's soccer with the UTB/TSC men's soccer team.
Gamboa has been the starting keeper for four years for the Vikings, who won the District 32-5A championship every year Gamboa played.
"Juan is a terrific young keeper with a very bright future in front of him," Scorpion men's soccer coach Dan Balaguero said. "He has great hands and lightning-quick reflexes. He also has great feet which is vital in the modern game. I feel that we have signed one of the top young keepers in the nation."
Balaguero was also proud about Gamboa's academic standing, which includes a Top Five Percent ranking. "Juan is the total student-athlete; he is a scholar."
Gamboa is ecstatic to play collegiate soccer at home. "I am very excited to play for the Scorpions. It is important for me to be close to home, and my parents are very excited about that. I know several of the guys who have already signed with the team, and it looks like we’ll have a good team.”
Besides his high academic ranking, Gamboa is a member of National Honor Society of High School Scholars, and medaled recently in a state art competition. He hopes to major in business.
Gamboa becomes the second high school player and sixth overall to sign with the Scorpions. Current UTB/TSC students Jorge Briones, Filiberto Cortinas and Rogelio Perez, all graduates of Porter High School; and Edgar Gracia, a graduate of Lopez High School, along with San Benito High School's Ricky Rodriguez previously signed letters
The men’s soccer team begins play August 23, 2007 against the Instituto Tecnologico Superiores de Poza Rica Petroleros.
