SAN BENITO -- Ricky Rodriguez, a senior at San
Benito High School, signed a letter of intent on to play for the UTB/TSC Scorpions
men's soccer team during a signing ceremony Thursday, April 5.
Rodriguez becomes the first current high school player and fifth player overall to sign with the Scorpions. Current UTB/TSC students Jorge Briones, Filiberto Cortinas and Rogelio Perez, all graduates of Porter High School; and Edgar Gracia, a graduate of Lopez High School, signed letters of intent in March.
"He’s a blue chip recruit for us," head men's soccer coach Dan Balaguero said. "He has very good technique, can play good with both feet and has great athleticism. He’s someone who understands the academics and is a very conscious about his grades as well."
Rodriguez felt that playing close to home was important. "I’m real excited about it. I had several offers from different universities, but I wanted to try out this new program. I’ll be able to play close to my family because I will get support from them. I’m always going to have someone there backing up."
Also attending the ceremony was Rodriguez' father, Ricardo Rodriguez; San Benito High School boys' soccer coach Joe Gonzalez, SBCISD Athletics Director Mario Pena, and San Benito High School principal Antonio Angel Rodriguez.
Balaguero felt fortunate to pick up a player of Rodriguez' caliber.
"A lot of schools looking at him, and this shows what kind of program we’re looking to put together. He will have a great collegiate career. He will be a vital part of the team that we need."
The men’s soccer team begins play August 23, 2007 against the Instituto Tecnologico Superiores de Poza Rica Petroleros.
