Balaguero Biography

Balaguero Named First Scorpion

Men's Soccer Coach

March 6, 2007

Dan Balaguero has been named the first coach for the new men’s soccer program at The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College.

Scorpion men’s and women’s soccer will begin in August 2007, with Balaguero as the first coach of the men’s program.

“This is a significant time for athletics at the University,” said Dan Huntley, UTB/TSC Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “By adding soccer to our sport sponsorship, we will be providing a great opportunity to connect the community more closely to our department. We have hired a coach has very high aspirations to compete in the NAIA national rankings.”

“Coach Balaguero not only has a great record and experience in the NAIA, but he has led two of his teams to the national tournament,” Huntley said. “Our expectation for all of our student-athletes is to provide them an opportunity for a great education and for them to participate in a national tournament during their Scorpion career.”

Balaguero is excited about starting the Scorpion soccer program.

“I’m excited about everything,” Balaguero said. “The campus is beautiful, and the administration has demonstrated a commitment to a winning program. It’s going to be a wonderful opportunity. I’m going to hit the ground running and am anxious to get started.”

Balaguero is also aware of the high interest of soccer in the area.

“I’m aware of the history of the success of high school soccer in the area, and this is a bonus for the university,” Balaguero said. “There is a passion for soccer in the area, and that makes everything even more exciting. I was really impressed with the love for soccer in Brownsville. The Valley will be a strong recruiting base.”

The first UTB/TSC men’s soccer game is scheduled for Thursday, August 23, 2007, against Instituto Tecnologico Superiores de Poza Rica Petroleros.
