HARLINGEN –- Scorpion junior golfer April Martinez scorched the Treasure Hills Country Club with an even-par 72 to break the school record and lead The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College to victory in the 10th Annual Sen. Eddie Lucio Invitational Sunday, February 17.
After an opening-round score of 86 in extreme wind conditions Saturday, Martinez had three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars Sunday to finish with a two-day total of 158. She finished 11 strokes ahead of Angela Aufderhaar of Texas Lutheran University (89-80) and Allison Valles of UTB/TSC (93-76) for medalist honors. The runners-up shot 169.
Valles was awarded the second medalist award because of a better second-day total, which included the only eagle in the tournament. Her first eagle of her collegiate career came Sunday on the second hole, a par-five 465-yarder.
