Scorpion Golfers Fare Well, But Trail Leaders

FORT WORTH -- All five members of the UTB/TSC men's golf team shot in the 70s, yet the Scorpions sit in seventh place after the first day of the UST Texas Collegiate Championship in Fort Worth Monday, March 19 at the Hawks Creek Golf Course.

Jones Mitchell led the Scorpions with a 35-37=72 score, two over par, yet he sits in a tie for 13th place, four shots behind the first-round leader. Overall, the Scorpions' score of 297 is 11 shots behind tournament co-leaders host Texas Wesleyan University and Wayland Baptist University. Seventeen universities are participating.

Other Scorpion scores were Chris Milligan with 38-36=74, Agapito Ortega with 39-36=75, Anthony Lopez with 38-38=76, and Jerry Borgogni with 42-35=77.

"We had a pretty good day," Scorpion head golf coach Bob Lucio said. "We're working real hard to bring our scores down. I saw a lot of good things out there today, but we're just one level away from these other guys. These other teams know who we are now."

The second round of the tournament begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 20.

Lucio said that the Scorpions have added the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison Classic in Shawnee, Okla. That tournament will the last competition for the Scorpion men's golf team before the Red River Athletic Conference and Region VI Championship Tournament April 23-24 in Edmond, Okla.
