Ortega's 69 Leads Tourney Field After 1st Day

LAGUNA VISTA -- UTB/TSC golfer Agapito Ortega shot a three-under-par 69 to lead the field after the first day of the 9th Annual Senator Eddie Lucio J

r. Intercollegiate Golf Tournament Saturday, February 17, at the South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista.

Ortega shot 35 on the front nine and 34 on the back nine of the course to take a three-stroke lead on the 20-man field on the course located just inside the bay and within viewing distance from South Padre Island.

Trailing Ortega is Scorpion teammate Jones Mitchell, who had a 36-36=72 for the first day.

The Scorpions lead the team race with a first-day total of 298. New Mexico Community College is second at 311, Northwood University is third at 315, and Texas A&M International is fourth at 351.

Jordan Moore of NMJC is third in the individual medalist race with a 75.

Other scores for the Scorpion golf team include Anthony Lopez at 78, Chris Milligan at 79, Victor Calzada at 83, and Jerry Borgogni at 83.

The 36-hole tournament concludes Sunday, February 18, at the South Padre Island Golf Club.

Four men's teams and four women's teams will be participating in the 36-hole tournament. Staggered tee times will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The women will tee off first Saturday and the men will tee off first Sunday.

The men's field is composed of the host UTB/TSC, New Mexico Junior College, Northwood University, and Texas A&M-International University. The women's field is made up of UTB/TSC, McMurray University, Texas Lutheran University, and TAMIU.

A practice round is scheduled at 1 p.m. Friday at the SPI Golf Club.

The next action for the men's and women's golf teams will be at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Spring Invitational Tournament in Salado February 26-27.
