Aughney Named Scorpion Assistant Baseball Coach
Posted September 6, 2007
Bryan Aughney has been named Assistant Baseball Coach at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.

Aughney replaces Derek Waddoups, who resigned in June to return to his home in Roy, Utah, and become assistant baseball coach at Salt Lake City Community College.

"He’s somebody who I have lot of trust in," Scorpion head baseball coach Joel Barta said. "His work ethic is his best trait. He’s someone that you don’t have to tell to go to work. That’s his mentality."

Aughney was Barta's first assistant coach when Barta coached the Wisconsin Woodchucks of the Northwoods League for two summers in 2005 and 2006 and was Barta's assistant coach for two seasons at Northland College (Wis.)

"I’m excited that we have eliminated two months of teaching and re-teaching by our decision to bring Brian on board," Barta said. "He’s someone who has played for me, coached with me and grew up on my offense."

Aughney, a native of Bozeman, Montana, is eager to bring his expertise to the Scorpions.

"I am excited to become a member of the Scorpion baseball family and athletic staff," Aughney said. "Our Athletics Director Dan Huntley has a great vision for the future, and that is something that I wanted to be a part of.

"I am also excited to work with Coach Barta again, whom I played under and coached for. He has started to build a great program down here and it's only going to get better.  The players are excited for this season and hungry to get to work, and so am I."

Aughney was Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Baseball Coach for the Northland from 2004-06 before going to Bellevue University (Neb.) as Assistant Baseball Coach for the 2006-07 season.

He attended Dawson Community College (Mont.) from 2001 to 2002, helping the Buccaneers win their conference and region championship and advancing to the 2001 NJCAA World Series. He then transferred to Northland College (Wis.), where he became an All-Conference outfielder and utility player and was team captain and received the Team Foreman Award in 2004. Aughney was a two- time All-Conference Outfielder under Barta.

While at Bellevue University he worked with Big Sky Baseball, a select showcase team from Montana, in his down time.

In 2005, Aughney received with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and a Coaching Minor and made the Dean's List.  He also earned Academic All-Conference honors. He is working on his Master of Arts in Leadership degree at Bellevue through online coursework.
