Waddoups
Resigns As Scorpion Assistant Baseball Coach
August 7, 2007
Derek Waddoups, assistant baseball
coach at UTB/TSC, has resigned to accept a position closer to his hometown of
Roy, Utah.
Waddoups, who served as the assistant to head coach Joel Barta for one year, will become the assistant baseball coach at Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah.
"I can't say I'm surprised," Barta said. "When he talked to me about where it was, I knew how important it was for him to be at home. It's part of what we do. You have to be comfortable with where you're at. For this opportunity to come up, it was a good opportunity for him."
"We were very fortunate to have Derek here as a coach this past year," Athletics Director Dan Huntley said. "His commitment to student success and character development greatly helped in our transition from the NJCAA to the NAIA. He and Coach Barta have worked extremely hard to change the mentality of our baseball program by setting the expectation that success on and off of the field is expected. We wish Derek the best of luck as he moves into his new position.”
Waddoups is leaving for family reasons to be closer to his parents.
"I have been impressed with the vision and the overall attitude of the university and the athletic department," Waddoups said. "I am very grateful for the opportunity given to me. I appreciated everyone in the campus community, and Dan Huntley's efforts to push character and integrity first. That was very important for me. The friendships I have made will be something I will have for the rest of my life."
A search for Waddoups' replacement will begin immediately.
