Three baseball recruits from Brownsville and one from La Joya signed NAIA Letters of Intent to play for the Scorpion baseball team in 2008.

Outfielder Jorge Camarlinga and catcher Ben Taliancich from Brownsville Hanna, catcher Juan Munoz from Brownsville Lopez, and shortstop Ole Hinojosa from La Joya will join the Scorpions.

"We're excited to have these four Valley players as they understand the process it takes to develop an overall quality baseball program," Scorpion assistant baseball coach Derek Waddoups said. "They are committed both in the classroom and on the athletic field and understand what it means to a part of the Scorpion baseball family."

Jorge Camarlinga (outfielder)

"Jorge big assets are his intensity, speed and athleticism he brings to the table," Waddoups said.

Camarlinga was first team All-District 32-5A and was named to The Brownsville Herald All-Metro first team. He batted over .400 and played errorless baseball in 2007 and also played soccer for two years at Hanna. He plans to major in Business.

"This is close to home, and it was important to me that my parents can watch me play because I'm an only child." said Camarlinga, who also played in the Scorpion Winter League. "There are great coaches here, it's a great baseball organization and I hope to learn from the Coach (Joel) Barta and Coach Waddoups."

Ben Taliancich (catcher)

"Ben's ability to receive the baseball behind the plate sets him apart and also his ability to provide a power bat in the lineup will help him develop as a college baseball player," Waddoups said.

Taliancich was third team All-District 32-5A as a catcher with a .400 batting average. He plans to major in Criminal Justice.

"I played infield most of my life until I got to high school," Taliancich said. "It was a big change but I adjusted to it. My first goal here is to get an education and then play baseball. I want to help out the team as much as I can. I'm hoping to work my way up."

Ole Hinojosa (shortstop)

"Ole's baseball IQ and left side defense are what excite us about his future here," Waddoups said. "He's a natural leader who understands the game and how to relate it to others."

Hinojosa was second team All-District 30-5A as a junior and Honorable Mention as a senior. He played in the Scorpion Winter League. He plans to major in Criminal Justice.

"It was important for me to continue my education and stay close to home," Hinojosa said. "I was impressed with the coaching staff, and I want to a better baseball player."

Juan Munoz (catcher)

"Juan is a natural leader who relates well and works with different types and personalities in pitchers," Waddoups said. "He will be a nice complement to our pitching staff as he knows to run in-game management from behind the plate."

Munoz was the starting fullback for the Lopez for three years and was first team all-district two years. For the Lobo baseball team, he was Defensive Player of the Year in District 32-5A, and was named to the All-Metro and All-Valley teams. As a junior, he was named to the All-Bay Area team. He batted .565 with three home runs as a junior. He plans to major in Speech Therapy.

"There's nothing better than playing at home and the family is close by," Munoz said. "Education comes first and I want to graduate from here."
