Scorpions End Season with Doubleheader Rout of Poza Rica

Hawk Scott and Gilbert Gonzales, the only two seniors on the UTB/TSC baseball team, had big nights as the Scorpions routed
Instituto Tec Superiores Poza Rica, 21-0 and 9-1, Thursday, April 24, at Scorpion Field in their final two games of the season.

Scott hit for the cycle and drove in five runs in the first game and hit a two-run homer in the second game while Gonzales had five hits and five RBI in the doubleheader.

The Scorpions finished their inaugural season as members of the NAIA with a 21-26-1 record.

"It's nice when we play relaxed like that, and when we play relaxed, we;re so different," Scorpion head coach Joel Barta said. "You don't have to have all that tension in your game. We can put everyone in the mix and it's more enjoyable."

The 2007 season was somewhat of a disappointment for Barta, who is missing the postseason for the first time since he was in high school.

"Hopefully we can say that this is the worst season that we're ever going to have," Barta said. "People are starting to understand our system what the expectations are, on and off the field, but also in the community and in the classroom as to what kind of product we want to put out."

Scorpions 21, Poza Rica 0 (first game)

Scott completed the cycle with a triple off the left-center field wall in the fourth inning, when the Scorpions scored nine runs. Earlier in the inning, he blasted a three-run homer. The game was called after four and one-half innings because of the 10-run rule.

Andres Monterrubio had three hits and five RBI, Gilbert Gonzales two hits and four RBI, and Kevin Cantu, Brian Dombeck, Evan Hardman and Chris Walker also had two hits each as part of the Scorpions’ 21-hit attack.

Trey Garcia pitched all five innings for the Scorpions, striking out five.

Scorpions 9, Poza Rica 1 (second game)

Gonzales had three hits to lead the Scorpions while Gabe Cruz and Luis DeJesus had two hits each.

Lamar Guzman pitched six innings to get the victory. Scott got a chance to pitch in the final inning and allowed one hit in his final collegiate action.
