Posted April 23, 2007
HOUSTON -- Texas A&M International
University held off a UTB/TSC rally
in the bottom of the seventh inning
to earn a 9-8 victory and later
cruised to a 9-1 win for a
doubleheader sweep Monday, April 23,
at Scorpion Field.
The victories lifted the Dustdevils to a 31-15 record while the Scorpions dropped to 17-25-1.
"The first game, there were a couple of things that didn't go our way, it was a close game that went down to the end," Scorpion head coach Joel Barta said. "In the second game, we just couldn't get any offense going. It's a credit to their pitchers, they shut us down."
The Scorpions will end their season with four non-conference home games -- two doubleheaders against Instituto Tec Superiores de Poza Rica Wednesday and Thursday, April 25-26. Game times each day are 5 p.m. at Scorpion Field.
Dustdevils 9, Scorpions 8 (first game)
The Scorpions battled back from a 9-3 deficit and had the tying run on third base when the game ended. UTB/TSC scored one in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh but fell short.
Mason Dixon hit a two-run homer and Hugo Sanchez a solo blast for the Dustdevils to lead their 11-hit attack. Dixon, Sanchez, Antonio Ramos and Angel Encinas had two hits each. Ramos went five innings on the mound to earn the victory.
For UTB/TSC, Gabe Cruz, Hawk Scott, Gilbert Gonzales and Walter Blume each had two hits. Price scored three runs. Starter David Belleperche (6-3) was the losing pitcher, going four innings and allowing five earned runs.
Dustdevils 9, Scorpions 1 (second game)
The Dustdevils jumped on Scorpion starter Julian Moya for six runs in the first three innings to cruise to the victory.
Arek Zambanini and Ricky Hernandez led TAMIU with two hits each to pace a nine-hit attack.
The Scorpions had only four hits off Jeremy Wilhelm and Adam Serrano. Their lone run came in the third inning when Luis DeJesus singled and scored on a double by Gilbert Gonzales.
