Scorpions Drop 2-1 Decision to Jarvis Christian

Posted April 7, 2007
HAWKINS, Tx. -- Jarvis Christian College held off a UTB/TSC rally in the ninth inning to preserve a 2-1 victory over the Scorpions at Dawgs Field here Saturday, April 7 in wintry weather conditions.

The loss dropped the Scorpions to 5-4 in Red River Athletic Conference South Division play and 16-18-1 overall. Jarvis improved to 3-4 in RRAC South play and 6-14-1 overall. Snow flurries were falling during the first two innings, but the winds were light.

Jon Ali struck out seven batters in six and two-thirds innings, and reliever Kevin Cantu struck out three of the four batters he faced. Ali dropped to 0-3 for the season.

"Jon and Kevin both threw extremely well," Scorpion head coach Joel Barta said.  "They scratched a couple of runs off us and we didn't executive our short game. When the situations are limited, you have to take advantage of the opportunities you have, and we didn't."

Down 2-0 going into the top of the ninth, Jacob Yousif led off the inning with a triple and came home on a single by Brian Dombeck to cut the lead to 2-1. Gilbert Gonzales was later by a pitch, but the Scorpions left the two baserunners aboard as the game ended.

Dombeck and Yousif each had two hits for the Scorpions, who had seven total.

Jose Morales pitched eight innings to get the win for Jarvis.

The Scorpions continue RRAC South play with a three-game home series against Wiley College, starting with a single game at 7 p.m. Friday, April 13, and a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14 at Scorpion Field.
