Scorpions Extend Winning Streak to 4 Games

ODESSA -- The UTB/TSC Scorpions extended their winning streak to four games with a 5-1, 5-2 doubleheader sweep over The University of Texas-Permian Basin Friday, February 23 at Roden Field.

The Scorpions (6-7-1) and Falcons (5-8) play another doubleheader in Odessa Saturday, February 24, starting at 10 a.m.

"We pitched real well today, and that makes everything so much easier," Scorpion coach Joel Barta said. "The wind was blowing in hard, and we threw more fastballs than normal. We had conditions working on our favor."

The wins were the third and fourth straight for the Scorpions, all coming on the road. On February 19, UTB/TSC swept a doubleheader from Concordia University, to start the 19-game road trip, so things are looking positive for the Scorpions.

"The biggest thing I told them was the game gets a lot easier when you play your game," Barta said. "Hopefully that mentality is starting to come, that Yankee corporate image, when you go out and have a job to do, and take care of business."

Julian Moya and Kevin Cantu will start in Saturday's douleheader, with David Belleperche available in relief. After the Odessa trip, the Scorpions will play consecutive road series in Austin, Fort Worth, Dallas and Marshall before playing again at home March 23.

Scorpions 5, Falcons 1 (Game 1)

Trey Garcia (2-1) pitched a complete game, allowing six hits to pick up his second victory over the season. He threw 89 pitches, struck out four and walked two.

The Scorpions scored four runs in the fourth inning to break a scoreless deadlock. Hawk Scott, Brian Dombeck, Jacob Yousif and Evan Hardman had consecutive run-scoring hits in the four-run fourth. Dombeck and Hardman each had two hits for the Scorpions.

Scorpions 5, Falcons 2 (Game 2)

The Scorpions were down 2-1 going into the seventh inning before erupting for four runs in the come-from-behind victory. Jon Ali went five innings for the Scorpions, Lamar Guzman pitched the sixth, and Belleperche pitched the seventh to pick up his first save.

UTB/TSC had only five hits by Gabe Cruz, Chris Walker, Gilbert Gonzales, Jacob Yousif and Evan Hardman but made them count. In the seventh inning, the Scorpions had three hits and were aided by two Falcon errors.
