ODESSA -- The UTB/TSC Scorpions continue their 19-game, 28-day Texas tour with a four-game series at The University of Texas-Permian Basin Friday and Saturday, February 23-24 at Roden Field.
The Scorpions (4-7-1) and Falcons (4-6) play doubleheaders at 12 noon Friday and Saturday.
In their last outing Monday, February 19, the Scorpions swept a doubleheader from Concordia University, to start the 19-game road trip. After the Odessa trip, the Scorpions will play consecutive road series in Austin, Fort Worth, Dallas and Marshall before playing again at home March 23.
Scorpion coach Joel Barta tried to downplay the doubleheader sweep against Concordia. "For these guys, it’s a huge step. But we didn’t make a big deal out of it. This is the way we expect to play."
Expected to start on the mound in the four game series are Trey Garcia (1-1), David Bellperche (1-1), Julian Moya (0-0), Kevin Cantu (1-1), or Jon Ali (0-2).
Among the regular starters, shortstop Scott Price (.371) leads the team in batting followed by centerfielder Gabe Cruz (.342), and catcher-third baseman Brian Dombeck (.325), right-fielder/designated hitter Hawk Scott (.286) and catcher-third baseman Chris Walker (.276).
Cruz ranks fourth among the NAIA national leaders in stolen bases with nine. As a team, the Scorpions are fifth in the nation in steals, averaging 3.0 per game.
