Scorpions Sweep Doubleheader from Concordia

Posted February 19, 2007

AUSTIN -- The UTB/TSC Scorpions began their string of 19 road games with a doubleheader sweep of Concordia University, 7-5 and 4-3, Monday, February 19, at Keller-Faszholz Field.

It was the first doubleheader sweep for the Scorpions, who now stand at 4-7-1. The Tornados are 4-6.

Errors have plagued the Scorpions in the first 10 games and almost hurt again. "No matter how hard we tried to lose this one, we hung in there," Scorpion head coach Joel Barta said.

The Scorpions have blown leads before, but not Monday. "The biggest thing about today, when something happened, we did good job of shutting it off. For these guys, it’s a huge step. But we didn’t make a big deal out of it. This is the way we expect to play."

Barta went with four of his starting pitchers to pitch the doubleheader and the strategy worked.

The Scorpions next play Friday and Saturday, February 23-24, in Odessa against The University of Texas-Permian Basin, in the third and fourth games of their 19-game, four-week road trip.

Scorpions 7, Tornados 5 (First Game)

Julian Moya started and went two innings and Trey Garcia picked up the victory, going the final five innings.

The Scorpions scored four in the second, the big blow coming on a two-run double by Gabe Cruz, and one in the third and two in the fourth. Brian Dombeck and Scott Price had two hits each for the Scorpions.

Scorpions 4, Tornados 3 (Second Game, 8 Innings)

Jacob Yousif singled, moved to second on a balk, stole third, and scored on an error in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Yousif, Andres Monterubio and Evan Hardman had two hits each for the Scorpions.

Kevin Cantu pitched the first three innings and David Belleperche went the final five innings to pick up the victory.
