Scorpions Drop Pair to Texas Lutheran
Posted February 11, 2007
SEGUIN -- Texas Lutheran University pounded 19 hits in the first game and came back from a 3-0 deficit in the second to sweep a pair of baseball games from the UTB/TSC Scorpions, 15-2 and 6-3, Sunday, February 11.
TLU, the 18th-ranked NCAA Division III team in the country, is now 4-0 for the season while the Scorpions drop to 0-4-1.
"Defensively, we didn't have a good weekend. We have to work on routine defensive plays," Scorpion head coach Joel Barta said. "It's all mental, the guys were a little tight. You just got to go out and play relaxed."
In Game 2, the Scorpions took a 3-0 lead after the first three innings. In the second inning, Chris Walker walked, stole second and scored on Walter Blume's double. In the third, Gabe Cruz singled and Gilbert Gonzales and Hawk Scott had back-to-back doubles to stake the Scorpions to a 3-0 lead.
But Scorpion starter David Belleperche couldn't hold the lead, as the Bulldogs scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth on three hits and two Scorpion errors.
The game ended unexpectedly in the middle of the Scorpion sixth inning after Gonzales walked and Walker singled with one out. The game umpires called the game because of darkness in the middle of the inning.
"I wished we could have played a little more, who knows what could have happened," Barta said.
In the first game, the Scorpions managed only two hits, both in the second inning when they scored their first run. Walker singled, stole second and scored on Blume's single. UTB/TSC scored its other run in the sixth when Hawk Scott walked, went to second and third on passed balls, and scored on an infield error.
Kevin Cantu started for the Scorpions and went 3 1/3 innings, allowing 14 hits and 12 runs. Evan Hardman pitched the rest of the way, allowing five hits and three runs.
"Kevin had times where he was good, but when you're in the middle of the strike zone like that against good teams, they are going to make you pay," Barta said.
UTB/TSC opens its home season at 4 p.m. Thursday, February 15, with a doubleheader against Viterbo University of Wisconsin, as part of a five-game series.
