Scorpions Drop 15-Inning Season Opener, 6-5

BELTON -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 15th inning to knock off UTB/TSC, 6-5, in a game completed Saturday, February 10, that was suspended Friday, February 9.

The Scorpions and Crusders played to a 5-5 tie after 12 innings when the game was suspended because of darkness Friday. They resumed Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and played three more innings before the Crusaders scored.

Jon Ali pitched three last 2 2/3 innings for the Scorpions and surrendered the winning run. Trey Garcia started and pitched seven and one-third innings, allowing three unearned runs. Kevin Cantu pitched 1 2/3, and David Belleperche pitched three innings of scoreless relief, striking out three and allowing only one hit. The Scorpions committed five errors.

Brian Dombeck went 3-for-6 for the Scorpions, driving in two runs and scoring two. Jacob Yousif and Hawk Scott had two hits each.

UMHB, a NCAA Division III member of the American Southwest Conference, does not have lights on its baseball field. The Scorpions are in their first year in the NAIA as a member of the Red River Athletic Conference.

The Scorpions and Crusaders were scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday, February 10. On Sunday, February 11, the Scorpions will travel south to Seguin for a doubleheader against Texas Lutheran University starting at 1 p.m.

UTB/TSC opens its home season at 4 p.m. Thursday, February 15, with a doubleheader against Viterbo University of Wisconsin, as part of a five-game series.
