Scorpions Stop Jaguars, 14-4, for 1st Victory of Season

Jacob Yousif had three hits and three RBI to support the pitching of Tony Lerma as UTB/TSC won its first game of the season, 14-4, over The University of Houston-Victoria Saturday, February 16, at Scorpion Field.

However, the Jaguars got payback in the second game with a 10-run victory of their own over the Scorpions, 13-3.

UH-Victoria, coached by former Houston Astros infielder Terry Puhl, won three of the four games of the series and is now 6-1 against NAIA competitition. UTB/TSC is now 1-12.

The Scorpions resume play February 22-23 when they play a three-game series against Red River Athletic Conference North Zone member Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla.

Scorpions 14, Jaguars 4 (first game)

It was a complete turnaround for the Scorpions defensively, as UTB/TSC played error-free baseball for the first time this season.

Lerma allowed four earned runs in five complete innings of work. He had a 14-2 lead before the Jaguars' Chris Joseph belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to make it 14-4. But the Scorpions stopped UHV on the next play to win by the 10-run rule.

The Scorpions exploded for 10 runs in the first inning on five hits and three Jaguar errors.

Yousif had two doubles off the left-center field wall in very windy conditions, where gusts exceeded 40 mph. He scored twice in the game.

Jorge Camorlinga, David Pittman and Andres Monterrubio had two hits each for the Scorpions. Camorlinga, Pittman, Yousif, Ignacio Celedon and Monterrubio each scored two runs.

Jaguars 13, Scorpions 3 (second game)

UHV pounded 10 hits and received six walks to cruise to victory in the second game. After scoring a single run in the first, the Jaguars scored four runs each in the second, fourth and fifth innings.

The Scorpions had single runs in the first, third and fifth innings. In the first, Yousif tripled and Schane Collins doubled him in. Camorlinga had a run-scoring single in the third.

Zach Moya, the first of four Scorpion pitchers, took the loss.
