LUBBOCK – Lubbock Christian University, the seventh-ranked baseball team in the NAIA, overpowered the UTB/TSC Scorpions for the second straight day by scores of 17-3 and 12-2 at Hays Field Saturday, January 26.

With the doubleheader loss, the Scorpions remain winless after eight games this season. Lubbock Christian was opening its season and is now 4-0 after the four-game series sweep. On Friday, the Chaps won by scores of 10-0, 17-6.

“When you’re playing a really good team, you got to play clean and our pitching staff really didn’t compete,” Scorpions head coach Joel Barta said. “They tried to nibble around the outside of the zone, and got into a lot of hitter counts. When you do that against a team as good as them, you can’t make mistakes. You’ll pay the price.”

Barta saw positives in the Scorpions’ hitting attack.

“We didn’t swing the bats that badly, we were scoring runs and getting runners on base a lot,” Barta said. We took a step forward this weekend with our offensive approach. We had a lot of positive at bats.

The guys learned a lot from this weekend because playing these good teams will help us when we start playing conference games.”

The Scorpions return home to face the Scorpion Alumni at 7 p.m. Saturday, February 2. On Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3, the Scorpions will field a JV team against Laredo Community College at Scorpion Field. The next game that counts for the Scorpions will be Friday, February 8, on the road against Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Lubbock Christian 17, Scorpions 3 (first game)

For the second straight game, the Scorpions opened the game with a big inning but could not hold the lead. Robbie Mang, Jacob Yousif and Shaune Collins opened the game with walks to load the bases with no outs before Brian Dombeck doubled home two runs. Andres Monterrubio followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Scorpions a quick 3-0 lead.

The runs would be the only runs for the Scorpions in the five-inning game shortened by the 10-run rule. UTB/TSC had only two more hits by Jacob Yousif in the game, which was marred by four Scorpion errors.

LCU, which had 12 hits, scored two in the second inning, four in the third and 11 runs in the fourth. Bob Learned and Armando Dominguez each had two hits and four RBI for the Chaps.

Zach Moya (0-2) allowed six runs in three innings to absorb the loss for the Scorpions.

Starting pitcher Jesus Mendoza (0-2) was the losing pitcher for the Scorpions

Will Stramp hit for the cycle to lead LCU with four hits and three RBI. He had a two-run homer in the first inning and ended the game with a run-scoring triple in the eighth.
