LUBBOCK –
Nationally ranked Lubbock Christian University opened its season in a big way,
sweeping a doubleheader over UTB/TSC, 10-0 and 17-6, Friday, January 25 at Hays
Field.
The losses kept the Scorpions winless at 0-6. The Chaparrals, the seventh-ranked NAIA team in the country, is now 2-0.
UTB/TSC and LCU end their four-game series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 26. The first game will be seven innings and the second game will be nine innings.
LCU 10, UTB/TSC 0 (first game)
The Chaps jumped on Scorpion starting pitcher Antonio Lerma for six runs in the third inning to take an 8-0 lead, and then added two more runs in the fourth to make it 10-0. When the Scorpions did not score in the top of the fifth inning, the game was called because of the 10-run rule.
Robbie Mang opened the game for the Scorpions with a double, but he was stranded on third base. Mang also tripled with two outs in the fifth. Tyler O’Neal and Walter Blume had the other two hits for the Scorpions off Chris Holguin (1-0).
LCU had 11 hits off Lerma (0-2) and Lorenzo Ramirez. Jarred Bogany, Tyler Johnson and Armando Dominguez had two hits each for the Chaps.

LCU got back in the game quickly with five runs in the first two innings, and held a 7-4 lead going into the sixth inning when the Scorpions mounted a comeback.
Ignacio Celedon walked and Tyler O’Neal singled to start the rally. Celedon scored on an infield groundout by Chris Walker, and O’Neal scored on Mang’s single to make it 7-6. However, LCU scored four in its half of the sixth, once in the seventh, and five times in the eighth to end the game on the 10-run rule. Will Stramp, who hit a grand slam homer in the sixth, hit a two-run homer in the eighth to end the game.
