Scorpions Win Opener on Moya's Shutout, 7-0, but Lose Second Game

TYLER -- Julian Moya threw a complete game four-hitter to pitch the UTB/TSC Scorpions to a 7-0 victory over Texas College in the first game of a doubleheader Friday, March 21, in the Red River Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

However, the Scorpions' comeback in the second game fell short as Texas College won, 7-5.

The split leaves the Scorpions with a 13-22 record overall and 1-1 in RRAC South Zone play. Texas College is to 9-23, 1-1.

The two teams meet in Tyler again at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, in the finale of the three-game series.

After the Texas College series, the Scorpions are back on the road in Austin March 28-29 for a three-game conference series against Huston-'Tillotson University.

The Scorpions are coming off a 17-game homestand in which they won 11 games and lost six. The 17-game stretch came after the Scorpions opened the season with a 1-15 record.

Scorpions 7, Steers 0 (first game)

Moya won his fifth straight game after four season-opening losses. He allowed only four hits, struck out eight and did not walk a batter. His overall earned run average has dropped to 4.06. In his last six outings, he has allowed eight earned runs in 35 innings.

Jacob Yousif the only Scorpion with two hits, one a run-scoring double in the the third that brought home Jorge Camorlinga, whohad singled. Camorlinga and Yousif scored twice.

The Scorpions had seven hits.

UTB/TSC scored once in both the first and second innings and twice in the third to take a 4-0 lead. The Scorpions added three runs in the final seventh inning.

Steers 7, Scorpions 5 (second game)

UTB/TSC's first two hitters in the top of the ninth inning -- Camorlinga and Yousif -- both singled, but neither was able to score. After a sacrifice bunt by Andres Monterrubio, Ignacio Celedon lined out to center field, and a quick throw to the infield nailed Yousif at second base for a double play to end the game.

The game was tied 1-1 after two innings and 3-3 after three innings. The Scorpions scored twice in the sixth, but the Steers scored three times to take a 6-5 lead.

Highlights in the Scorpions' 10-hit attack included a run-scoring double by Schaune Collins in the second, a run-scoring single by Camorlinga in the third, and a run-scoring single by Gilbert Puente in the sixth.

Camorlinga had three hits for the Scorpions, while Celedon scored twice.

Tony Lerma (4-4) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Scorpions. Chris Walker, in his second appearance in relief this year, pitched two and one-thirds innings, allowing one hit without an earned run.
