Posted March 17, 2008
UTB/TSC erupted for 19 runs in the first two innings to breeze past Fisher College, 20-1, and then blanked the Falcons, 10-0, on a Zach Moya one-hitter for a sweep of their doubleheader in run-shortened games Monday, March 17, at Scorpion Field.

The sweep improved the Scorpions' record to 11-21 while Fisher dropped to 6-6.

The Scorpions will host Fisher College in a single game at 6 p.m. Tuesday, marking the end of a 17-game homestand. After Tuesday, UTB/TSC will not play another home game until April 4.

After the series with Fisher, the Scorpions finally begin Red River Athletic Conference South Zone play on the road March 21-22 against Texas College in Tyler.

Tuesday's game, along with the rest of the home schedule for the Scorpions, will be webcast. Fans can follow the action by following a link at http://athletics.utb.edu.

Scorpions 20, Falcons 1 (first game)

The Scorpions scored eight runs in the first inning and 11 in the second off six Falcon pitchers, who surrendered 13 hits and walked seven Scorpion batters. Scorpion head coach Joel Barta emptied his bench, substituting players at every position except for catcher Gilbert Puente and pitcher Tony Lerma.

Lerma improved his record to 4-3, going five innings, allowing five hits and striking out two. He did not walk a batter.

Five Scorpions had two hits each -- Ryan MacDonald, Tyler O'Neal, Scott Price, Gilbert Puente and Walter Blume. All scored at least two runs, with O'Neal scoring in three and MacDonald driving in three.

The first two innings took more than one hour, but the game finished in less than two hours because of the 10-run rule.

Scorpions 10, Falcons 0 (second game)

Moya had his best outing of the season, limiting the Falcons to four baserunners -- one hit and three walks. Moya (2-4) struck out three Falcons.

He got all of the run support he needed in the second inning when the Scorpions struck for four runs. After scoring a single run in the fourth, the Scorpions added two more in the fifth when Andres Monterrubio singled and Tyler O'Neal homered to give the Scorpions a 7-0 lead. UTB/TSC scored three times in the sixth to end the game because of the 10-run rule.

Monterrubio and Schaune Collins had two hits each for the Scorpions, who collected eight hits. O'Neal scored three runs for the Scorpions.
