Posted March 12, 2008
UTB/TSC scored eight runs in the first inning and breezed to a 16-2 rout of Paul Quinn College Wednesday, March 12, at Scorpion Field.

The win lifted the Scorpions to a 6-20 record at exactly the halfway point of the 52-game 2008 season. PQC dropped to 5-19.

The two teams continue their four-game series with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Thursday and a single game at 6 p.m. Friday. PQC is a member of the Red River Athletic Conference North Zone and UTB/TSC a member of the RRAC South Zone, but the games are not considered conference games.

Tiger pitchers Culbert Evans and Jorge Rivera combined to hit 10 Scorpion batters, with designated hitter Brian Dombeck getting plunked three times and Ignacio Celedon and Scott Price twice each. The Scorpions had nine hits.

Scorpion sophomore pitcher Julian Moya had another great performance, allowing only one earned run in seven innings of work and allowing only four hits. He struck out six and walked one to raise his record to 4-4.

Over the last 22 innings of work, Moya has allowed only four earned runs and has an ERA of 1.63.

After the eight-run first inning, punctuated by five Scorpion batters getting hit by pitched balls, the Scorpions scored one in the second, two each in the third and fourth, and three more runs in the fifth.

Ryan Macdonald and Andres Monterrubio had two hits each to lead the Scorpions, while Jorge Camorlinga, Dombeck and Celedon each scored twice.

The Scorpions had nine hits, but played poorly defensively with six errors.

The two teams have struggled early in the season, although the Scorpions played much better last week in a nine-game series against Valley City State College (N.D.) and Viterbo University (Wis.) UTB/TSC won two of four games from VCSU and two of five from VU for a 4-5 week. The Scorpions are 5-20 overall.

The PQC series is part of a 17-game homestand, which started March 2. After the PQC series, UTB/TSC has four games against William Woods University (Mo.) and Fisher College (Mass.) from March 16-18.
