Scorpions Begin Long Homestand with
Doubleheader Split
Posted
March 2, 2008
Ignacio Celedon, Brian Dombeck and Jacob Yousif
each smashed home runs to support the five-hit pitching of Julian Moya in
UTB/TSC's 13-3 win over Valley City State University (N.D.) and a split of
their doubleheader Sunday, March 3, at Scorpion Field.
The Scorpions came within an out of sweeping the doubleheader, but VCSU scored twice in the seventh inning to pull out a 6-5 victory.
UTB/TSC is now 2-16 for the season. The Vikings drove 1,660 miles by bus to open their season and are now 1-1.
It was the start of a long 17-game homestand for the Scorpions, who play the 17 games within 17 days. UTB/TSC next plays at home against Viterbo University (Wis.) in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 5.
"We came out relaxed and hit the ball well," Scorpion head coach Joel Barta said. "We did a good job getting pitches on hitting counts. That gets pretty contagious pretty fast."
Barta was also glad to see Moya show leadership on the mound.
"Julian pounded it, he did a good job on attacking the strike zone," Barta said. "He had pretty good command all day, and stayed with it. He did what we need from our pitching staff."
There will be 10 other games at Scorpion Field involving visiting teams in the next 18 days, including Monday, when VCSU and Viterbo meet in a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
Scorpions 13, VCSU 3 (first game)
Nursing a 10-0 lead after four innings, Moya came within one inning of a five-inning shutout but surrendered a three-run homer to Matt Huonder in the fifth inning to make it 10-3.
But Moya's teammates came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game because of the 10-run rule.
Strong southerly winds aided the four home runs in the game. After a Jorge Camorlinga single, Yousif launched the first homer to give the Scorpions a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Celedon's solo homer led off the four-run second inning, and Dombeck cracked a three-run shot to give the Scorpions a 10-0 lead after four innings. The homer landed on the roof the Recreation, Education and Kinesiology (REK) Center under construction beyond left and center fields.
The Scorpions finished with 13 hits, three by Camorlinga, and two each by Ryan McDonald, Celedon and Chris Walker. Yousif and Dombeck had four RBI each.
Moya (1-4) struck out seven and walked one in five innings of work.
VCSU 6, Scorpions 5 (second game)
Camorlinga went 3-for-3 for the Scorpions, who had seven hits, but could not push across a run in the bottom of the seventh.
UTB/TSC trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the sixth, but scored twice to take a 5-4 lead on Camorlinga's run-scoring single and Yousif's run-scoring triple.
But the Vikings got two runs in the seventh, the first on Chauncey Calhoun's solo homer with two outs. In the bottom of the seventh, the Scorpions left the tying run on second base.
Tony Lerma (1-4) was the losing pitcher, allowing two earned runs in four and two-thirds innings on the mound.
The Vikings had 11 hits, two each by Jeremy Wiebe, Bryce Ingram, Chris Olson and Calhoun.
