Northwood Wins Championship

Northwood Wins RRAC
Championship, 13-12
Posted May 2, 2008
In a game that featured 40 hits, Northwood University held off a furious Texas Wesleyan University comeback for a 13-12 victory and the 2008 Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Championship tournament Friday, May 2, at Scorpion Field.

Northwood went through the tournament undefeated in four games. Texas Wesleyan had runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but could score the tying or winning runs.

After a seven-run seventh inning, the Knights held a seemingly insurmountable 13-5 lead. But the Rams scored five runs in the eighth to cut the lead to 13-10 and two more in the dramatic ninth inning.

Each team had 20 hits. There were three homers, one triple and six doubles.

Northwood's R.J. Harris went 4-for-4 and scored three runs, while teammate Cody Via went 4-for-6 with four RBI.

For Texas Wesleyan, Antoine Cole and Ryan Ragsdale had three hits each.

Had TWU rallied to win, another meeting between the two schools would have been necessary Friday evening. Northwood, which was third in the North Zone during the regular season and seeded fourth in the tournament, had defeated TWU on Thursday afternoon in a matchup of undefeated teams, 18-9.

UT-Brownsville/TSC, the sixth seed, finished third in the tournament.

Northwood and TWU are expected to invited to the NAIA Region VI Tournament in Oklahoma City next week.
