Course Orientation

**Please note that these guidelines are for my courses only and do not apply to any courses hosted by other faculty members.

Getting Started:

After registering for your course you will be added to the roster for the course at the Black Board site on Scorpion Online.  You may look over materials and print your syllabus at that time.  Please do not submit assignments prior to the first day of class.  All course work is conducted through the Black Board Learning System.

Submission of Assignments:

All assignments are turned in by attachment within the Messaging area.

Messaging:

The Messaging area is a place for students to communicate with each other and plan group projects. The messaging system is NOT the same as email. All conversation remain within the Black Board system and you will know immediately if you message was delivered. If you can see your sent message the recipient will also be able to see it. All assignments are submitted through the Messaging Link.

Faculty/Student Communication:

All communication between student and faculty member is done by following the Messaging link. I check the Messaging area at least once a day Monday-Friday.

Email:

When you communicate by email or the messaging area please include a greeting and signature to all correspondence. Also helpful, is reference to which course about which you are writing.

Mastery Teaching:

My personal philosophy includes the belief that all students be allowed to achieve the grade they desire. To this extent I assume all students want to receive an “A” in my class. If you aspire to any other grade please let me know early on in the course. Otherwise I will return and assist you with your class achievement until you earn an “A”. When I receive an assignment that is any grade other than an “A” I will return it with suggestions for revisions that will help you earn the “A”. Your progress in my course is not measured against any other persons progress, you are not competing in any way for your grade. All student/teacher collaboration is individualized to meet your personal and academic needs. Holisim is a philosophy which threads through not only the BSN/MSN curriculum but also the teaching/learning relationship.

Student Grades:

Much like a classroom based class your grades are available by discussion with me. If at any point you are interested in your standing in the course email me your request and we can begin a conversation about your grades and progress. I do not use the Black Board grade book for a number of reasons that ultimately relate to technical issues and additional stress for the student which I would like to eliminate.

Naming Files:

Your assignments will be sent by attachment to me through the Messaging area. The file you attach needs a very specific name. The formula for naming an assignment is as follows:
Number of Course-Underscore-FirstInitialLastName-Underscore-UnitNumber. Here is an example: 6365_Amiller_U1

Late Work:

I do not take off points for late work. I do expect work to be turned in on time. If you have a problem with timely submission please email me with your concerns. Do be aware that, although I do not take points off late assignments, your grade may be lowered by one letter upon receiving your third late assignment.

Course Calendar:

I have provided a course calendar that chronicles all the important dates of which you should be aware. It is very important for all of your work to be turned in by the last class day. I am required to generate a grade for you very soon after that date and it is not negotiable with the UTB grading system.

Course Evaluation:

Near the end of the course a link will appear on the menu linking you to the course evaluation. This is placed by the DE department and we must wait for the link to appear before completing the evaluation. Please take the time to fill out the evaluation. It greatly assists me in the revision of my courses.

During semesters that do not have online evaluations, you will be provided a paper and pencil evaluation to fill out.  Your comments are greatly appreciated.

It is great having you in my course and I hope you enjoy the semester!
