TEAMS 2011 Competition

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College will be hosting the Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAMS) competition on March 11, 2011.  The online registration deadline is February 22, 2011.  All paper work and registration fee should be submitted to JETS by this date. The competition will be held at building TBA.  Registration will begin at 1:20 p.m.  We expect to competition to end about 6:00 p.m.

TEAMS enables teams of high school students to learn team development and problem-solving skills, often with an engineering mentor, and then participate in an open-book, open-discussion engineering problem competition.  Teams learn how the mathematics and science concepts they are learning in high school are applied to real-world problems.

Teams from area high schools will compete in six competition divisions based on school admissions policy and 12th grade enrollment, as well as one home division.  Participating teams will be eligible for local, state, and national awards.   Teams consisting of 4 to 8 students will compete in one of two levels;  9th/10th or 11th/12th grade. Other competitions will be held through out the state and nation during the period from the second week in February  to the third week in March.  JETS will announce state and national rankings in April.

Competition Guidelines and Rules

  1. Each high school team must have at least four members but no more than 8.  All members must be from the same school.

  2. 9th/10th grade teams must consist of 9th and10th graders only.

  3. 11th/12th grade teams must consist of 11th and 12th graders only.

  4. The first part of the competition will be an exam consisting of 80 multiple-choice questions.  Each high school team will work together and will submit one set of answers.  Site awards will be determined by the team scores on this exam.  These scores will also be used to determine state rankings in appropriate divisions and to select the teams that will advance to nationals.

  5. The second part of the competition will consist of extension questions from the first part of the test.  Again, teams will submit one set of answers.  Results of Part II responses will be used to determine national rankings and awards for those teams that advance to national scoring.

  6. Different exams will be administered to each grade level.

  7. There is no penalty for incorrect answers.

  8. Coaches may not assist their teams during the competition and should not be present in the testing area.

  9. Make sure that all forms are filled out properly to avoid disqualification from the competition.

  10. Schools will not be allowed to take any tests or test materials from the competition. The host will mail all test materials to the schools after the competition window closes.

  11. Students are limited to competing in one TEAMS competition per year.

  12. Each school is limited to attending one TEAMS competition per year.

Coaches must register for TEAMS online at http://www.jets.org or click on the online registration link below.  The cost is $125 per team if registration is submitted by November 30, 2010.
Fees will go directly to JETS this year and not to the host.  Payment should be made during the registration process.
